Life in the Suburbs

In 1947, Abe Levitt and his sons began to build nearly identical homes in what had been a potato field on Long Island, NY.  By 1951, Levittown, NY was thriving and had its own zip code.
 

The American Suburb was born.


What is a suburb?  Where does the word come from?
 

We start with the definition, and our main lesson will be looking at some primary sources and examining Levittown more closely in an in-class writing.
