Art and the Modern World

Artists are the antennae of the race--Ezra Pound.  In the 1920s, artists were the first people to realize that the world had changed forever as a result of the Great War.  Music, visual arts and literature all reflected the "modern world."  Shocking to many, the works of post-war artists eventually became part of the American social fabric.

"The world broke in two in 1922 or therabouts."  --Willa Cather (dominance of urban, secular America, decline of family authority, mass culture).
