The First Hundred Days
Consensus in America. "I pledge a new deal for the American people." With these words, President Franklin Roosevelt animated the New Deal--"bold, persistent" federal action meant to provide RELIEF to suffering Americans, promote RECOVERY of the economic system, and prevent future catastrophe by systematic REFORM.
FDR's New Deal is based on the premise that government should help Americans in times of need. Will Americans widely share faith in government action? Will America enter a period of widespread agreement--will there be a consensus?
Note: Think of the New Deal and the Great Depression as the Yin-Yang symbol--they occur simultaneously.
