In December 1944, Hitler took his last major gamble. He sent his toughest available Panzer Divisions through the thinly-held American and British lines in the Ardennes Forest, an area of Belgium that separates France from Germany.

 

The Ardennes battle--the Battle of the Bulge--became the Stalingrad of the Western Front: vicious fighting in bitter cold between armies that took no prisoners.
